Today, we took the HSL Ferry from Helsinki Market Square (Kauppatori) for a visit to Suomenlinna.
The weather was great, and a seagull was accompanying our trip.
One of the first structures that one gets to see upon arrival is the pink Jetty Barracks building that dominates the northern shore of Suomenlinna. Built from 1868 to 1870, it was intended for peacetime use by 250 soldiers.
Passing through the gate, there was a nice play of shadows on the backside of the building.
As it was a good time for lunch, we chose the nearby “Café Silo”, where we enjoyed a salmon quiche with a side salad and a cup of coffee.
After this meal, it was time to explore the island. We passed Suomenlinna Church, which was built as an Orthodox garrison church in 1854. Its tower additionally functions as a lighthouse serving both air and sea traffic.
Walking a bit more, we reached Bastion Zander, built between 1748 and 1750 as a chain of four bastions.
Nature and man-made elements blend into a colorful and harmonious ensemble.
Towards the later part of our loop walk, we passed Suomenlinna Public Library, …
… and went through an old gate underneath Pirunkirkko Banquet Hall.
On the return ferry to the city center of Helsinki, we caught this view of Uspenski Cathedral and the SkyWheel.
