Fort Goryōkaku is a massive, star-shaped citadel, which was built in the last years of the Edo Period (1603-1868) for the defense of Hakodate against the imperialist threat posed by Western powers. A few years later, the fort became the site of a civil war between an army of the shogunate and the superior troops of the newly-established Meiji government. Nowadays, it is a park that is best viewed from the observation deck of the 107-meters-tall Goryokaku Tower.

After having soaked in the views of the fort and of other parts of the city, we strolled back to the tram stop and rode to Jujigai, which is located in short walking distance from the Red Brick Warehouses. Hakodate Port was one of the first Japanese ports to be opened to international trade towards the end of the feudal era. Along the waterfront in the bay area of Hakodate, several red brick warehouses from past trading days have been redeveloped into a pretty nice shopping, dining and entertainment area. We arrived around dusk to some very appealing late-day sunlight.
